Home Again

It's good to be home. Weird and not weird at the same time.
I love San Francisco. That is a fact.
I miss my girlfriend a lot and wish she were here with me.
Palo Alto is much hotter than Morelia.
San Francisco is much colder than any place should be in July.
Sitting in traffic doesn't help you spend time with family or friends.
My niece is non-stop. Action. Talk. All the time. Impossibly cute. I'm biased but that's a fact.
Trips home can go to fast. I don't like to plan the days but wish I had.
Too much to do. Too little time.
Best city in the US? I'd say so.

The Approaching Storm

Walking home in the early evening after a cup of coffee in the Centro I saw the sky light up in a flash, just past the mountains to the east of town. Despite the almost constant bursts of brilliant luminescence, the evening remained tranquil and clear as the storm had not yet decided when it would stop by, though with each step the wind rushing across my ears assured me it wouldn’t be long.

After 28 years I still can't get over thunder and lightening. With each new storm I'm struck by a halting sense of awe. On this young night I took a seat and watched as Nature pondered her course of action. In the end her verdict called for nothing more than a tantalizing peek and a lazy retreat, the grumbling clouds slip-sliding away to enchant some other corner of the sky.

Guadalajara: Part 1

We took a trip to Guadalajara to see the sights and check out the town. Guadalajara is the second largest city in Mexico with 4 million people and is a three hour bus ride from Morelia. What struck me most is that despite it's size, Guadalajara has a very tranquil atmosphere.

I took this picture of an Agave field from the bus. Tequila is made from Agave which is a big, blue plant that grows all over Mexico. Only liquor made with the Agave from the state of Jalisco can be called Tequila. Everything else is, well, something else. Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco.

Standing in front of a typical Guadalajara pedestrian street in the Centro. The climate in Guadalajara is just a little bit hotter than Morelia but still mostly mild compared to what you are probably thinking.

Normally filled with speeding cars, this busy downtown street is closed for business and open for pleasure on Sundays. An amazing idea that produces a wholly agreeable weekend atmosphere right in the heart of the city.

Weigh yourself on this machine that must be 100 years old...only 1 peso!

Better than the Heimlich

I learned a bit of first-aid yesterday. If someone is choking, repeatedly snap your fingers above their head and yell the following in their face as fast as you can: "Pájarito pájarito pájarito pájarito pájarito..."

Most of the time they will stop choking.

"Pájarito" means "little bird" in Spanish.

Don't ask me. I just live here.

About me

  • I'm Nate
  • From Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico
  • I used to live in California. Then I met the girl you see here in this photo. The next thing I knew I was in Mexico swinging a frying pan at a scorpion and chasing after phantom trucks. You will find pictures and stories about my life in the pages that follow.
