El Gallo

Morelia has more people than San Francisco and yet every morning I'm woken up by the rooster that lives somewhere on my block.

Rooster Alarm Clock

Pros:
Save money on alarm clock.
Cons: Wakeup time not negotiable. No snooze button. Service may be interrupted by culinary needs of owner.

Please leave a message after the...

**Beep**

I just added this little green button to my site that allows you to leave me a voice message. You don't have to download any software or sign up for any service, just click the button, and talk into your microphone (most laptops and webcams have them built in). It will automatically send your message to me and I think I can reply. Pretty cool, no? Well, I guess we will see.

You can find this little green box of Internet magic on the right side of my site, just below the picture of that dork in the sombrero. The button looks like this...

Send Me A Message

So make haste and send me a message already!!

Morelia

Morelia is the incredibly beautiful capital of the state of Michoacan. Founded by the Spanish about 500 years ago, Morelia retains much of the charm and striking buildings often found in the quaint old towns of Europe.

The cathedral is the center of the city. My school and apartment are both less than a 10 minute walk away.

The cathedral and all the historic buildings are built from a pink stone called "Cantera Rosa" which literally means Pink Quarry...or something like that. The cool thing is that as the sun sets, these buildings appear to glow. I will try and take a picture of this for you to see. Anyway, if you are there at the right time it looks amazing.

One of the parks that on the side of the cathedral.
A typical Morelia street in the morning. You can just see the edge of the park from the previous picture on the right side of this photo.
That is a taste for now. I will post more pictures soon but today is Saturday and there are laws here about doing too much of anything on the weekend.

Salsa!

I had my first salsa dancing class on Tuesday and my next one is tonight. My Spanish language school offers free classes for students. Marisol is, of course, the star of the class. I, on the other hand, haven't lost my American stiffness yet. My inability to move my hips side to side continues to be a source of much frustration. Luckily this is a very common problem for the other gringo students in the class. I actually feel pretty good because Marisol told me I improved from a 0 to a 2.5 after just one class. I didn't ask what scale that was on but I'm pretending it's out of 10. ;-)

Hola Mis Amigos

Hello everyone. As you know, I'm now living in Mexico in the city of Morelia. I will share photos of my life here in Mexico with you on this page. This site is organized in chronological order so the oldest posts are at the very bottom. I recommend starting there.

Oh, and all the pictures can be enlarged if you click on them.

More pictures coming soon - stay tuned.

On The Boat to La Isla Ixtapa

That is the north end of Ixtapa behind the driver. Our hotel was just out of the picture to the right. The weather is perfect in Ixtapa in February - hot but not humid with perfectly warm, comfortable nights.

More Ixtapa Wildlife

My, What Big Teeth You Have

On Sunday we went to la Isla Ixtapa, a little island just 5 minutes by boat from the local beach. On the way we stopped on a bridge that was over this mini-nature preserve containing 6 big old crocs. I had never seen one up close and they really look like something from the age of the dinasours, which I guess they are. Anyway, I was very happy they were down there and we were up on our "safe" little bridge.

Marisol was there waiting for me when I arrived and we hoped on the bus with out any problems. Next stop Morelia for one night and then off to Ixtapa.

Mexico City!!

My first stop is Mexico City, the craziest city I've ever visited. Despite what you've heard, D.F. as it's known here, is quite beautiful if you know where to go. There are quiet, tree lined streets, great cafes, and wonderful restaurants but it really helps to have a local show you around. Today my time in D.F. is very short, just long enough to meet Marisol, eat a quick bite and jump on a bus for Morelia, 4 hours to the west.
